Want to support this channel and help us preserve old films? Visit Visit our website Shot in 1963, this silent film shows a spacesuit dexterity or mobility test. The test subject performs a repeated task using a socket wrench. It’s not exactly clear what type of spacesuit was being tested, but it most likely was Mercury space suit or Navy Mark IV. This was a full-body, high-altitude pressure suit originally developed by the B.F. Goodrich Company and the U.S. Navy for pilots of high-altitude fighter aircraft. It is best known for its role as the spacesuit worn by the astronauts of the Project Mercury space flights. At least one of the slates shown is marked “Woodbury“, which may indicate that these tests were conducted at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, located on Woodbury Road in Altadena, California.
