Franz Liszt’s composition has been inspired by an episode from Nikolaus Lenau’s Faust. Nicolas Economou, Νικόλας Οικονόμου, born in Cyprus in 1953, was a brilliant pianist who was internationally known for the classical music competition Tchaikovsky Competition. As pianist, Economou played in Europe, Russia, Canada, Japan and USA mainly. He performed solo and with orchestras and others performers and composers like Martha Argerich, Rodion Shchedrin, Michel Beroff, and others. The virtuoso Nicolas Economou died in a car crash in 1993, at the age of forty. The Mephisto Waltzes are four waltzes composed by Franz Liszt in 1859–62, 1880–81, 1883 and 1885. Nos. 1 and 2 were composed for orchestra, and later arranged for piano, piano duet and two pianos, whereas 3 and 4 were written for piano only.
