We were lucky to have our friend Johana — a samba teacher and musa — take us behind the scenes this year as her samba school, Porto da Pedra, vies for the winning spot of the night. Victory in the Carnival parade comes with fame, glory, and money, so competition is fierce between the samba schools. Preparation for the parade takes an entire year and is a culmination of community effort and creativity.
