𝄞 How to start making drums like Louis Cole, Knower, JD Beck, Yussef Dayes, Chris Dave, etc. Why does every bar of music have 4 beats when there is so much rhythmically interesting music that can be made using odd time signatures. We are born into a rhythmic matrix, where our musical structure is dominated by a concept of weak and strong beats that may come from our experience as humans who walk with alternating right and left steps. By learning about subdivisions and using geometric shapes such as squares and triangles in our music, we can start to unplug from this rhythmic matrix and use time signatures with odd numbers of beats; 3/4, 5/4, and 7/8. Using odd time signatures is a great way to create contrast between sections while creating musical illusions that turn your songs into puzzles that can be challenging and fun for the listener to solve. By using them tastefully and sparingly you can renew the impact and freshness of the standard 4/4 meter. 𝄢
