Bill Withers ~ Lovely Day 1977 Disco Purrfection Version

Bill was the youngest of six children born in the coal mining town of Slab Fork, West Virginia. His father died when he was 13, and at 18 he enlisted in the US Navy and was honorably discharged in 1965. While in the Navy, he became interested in music, so in 1967 he moved to Los Angeles. To supplement his dream career, he worked as an aircraft assembler. In 1970 his demo tape got him signed to Sussex Records and Booker T Jones was assigned to produce him. The funds ran out after the second of three three hour studio sessions, and there was a six month wait until the last session commenced with Stephen Stills playing guitar on the final session. The LP “Just As I Am“ was released in 1971 with the single “Ain’t No Sunshine“ peaking at #3 that same year. The repeated phrase of “I know“ was originally being used as a placeholder for other lyrics, but Bill felt that there was no need and kept them as written.
