IELTS / TOEFL Essay: introduction paragraph as 1st impression
Of course, the entire IELTS or TOEFL essay is very important, but the introduction paragraph gives the grader the first impression of how you write. Graders have seen many essays, so they can understand right away what to expect from the rest of your essay just by reading the intro.
The intro tells the grader whether you understood the task or not. It also tells the grader whether you have planned your essay, whether you have enough ideas, and whether or not you understand the standards of academic writing.
Make sure to practice writing your intro paragraphs. Don’t make it too long (it shouldn’t be longer than either of the body paragraphs in a 2-body essay); get to the point and then spend more time, words and style on the body paragraphs, where your main arguments will be made.
In this video we look at an example of a weak intro paragraph and how to make it stronger.
