Bach - Cantata Ihr werdet weinen und heulen BWV 103 - Sato | Netherlands Bach Society

Jesus prefers images to explanation, to great confusion of his disciples. After announcing his death and resurrection, he tells them: “You will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy“. In the opening chorus to his cantata Ihr werdet weinen und heulen, Bach makes the words for weeping and wailing almost too painful to bear, the vocal lines crawling with semitones. Midway through, the choir suddenly falls silent for a dramatic recitative (for Jesus himself?). In the arias that follow, impressive recorder solos make way for a trumpet; a perfect match for Jesus’s valiant sacrifice.
