This season, SUSAN FANG builds on her early, traditional techniques to enrich her clothing with new crafts. Like before, prints resemble abstract marble-like patterns drawn in water, but this time they are entirely drawn by the designer’s mother, working thousands of miles away from her in China. Fang is known for her skillful use of gauze.
This season, she prints and dyes the material, then cuts the painted fabric into pieces of different widths and folds them by hand into multi-layered, three-dimensional “air prints“. Ingeniously arranged either horizontally or in ripples by the designer, these “air prints“ grow into beautiful rainbow-coloured clothes.
The abstract pattern prints are also worked into light and voluminous “Air-Flowers“, which are made by stitching together fabrics printed with measured handtacks using only strips and avoiding cut-offs. “Air-Flowers” and “Air-Print” together create a spring scene for this collection.
