It was unknown this version existed. Although fans are familiar with the original version from 1998-2001, as well as the contemporized version on the “Xscape” album, it has been revealed that “Xscape” (rumored to be originally titled “Escape”) was originally written as far back as 1986 during the Bad sessions Captain EO sessions, and recorded that same year with members of The Rag Tag Band, at Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angelos. It’s believed that this was made around the same time as Beautiful Girl, Blue Gangsta, Someone Put Your Hand Out & Who Is It. It was rejected from the Captain EO Soundtrack. The song was Quincy Jones’ idea, after Jackson was pulled over for driving too fast. Shortly after writing the song, he began working further on this version throughout 1986 with Joe Kehr, Quincy Jones, and members of The Rag Tag Band. To be specific; E. Phillinganes & Dr. Erkka were responsible for the percussive-bass, Eric L. Hayes & Barron St. Massey added horn overdubs later, and Sarah Greim (aka “Syradelic”) provided rhythm guitar. It’s believed that the original elements of “Speed Demon” come from this song. The song was planned for release as a promotional single for the upcoming album, along with a short film. During the Bad sessions, rap group Run . were invited in to perform a rap verse on the song. Afterwards, Quincy insisted for it to be removed mainly for time restrictions, despite Michael’s disagreement. Joe also recruited Tamyra Carey, from girl-group Tamyra 6, to provide background vocals, which can be heard on the 12” extended version. It is noted that the song contains a diss to Prince, and Mazarati, a band by bassist Brown Mark (from The Revolution), who released a semi-hit called “100 MPH” around the same time the song was being worked on. It is rumored to be due to their connection with Prince. It was later removed on the edited versions. While the song runs around 4 minutes, there are several edits of the track. The LP version is 4 minutes, while the extended / full-length version is 8 minutes long. In the extended version, there is an extra breakdown with a “Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)” interpolated chant, as well as a false fade coda, which features a diss to Prince. Due to time constraints, the song was edited down to multiple versions to potentially fit on a vinyl if they ever decided to put it on any album. While they all liked this version, Quincy felt it wasn’t strong enough for the upcoming album at the time as well as Quincy ending up not being too keen on the cars theme throughout the track. So despite Michael being unhappy with the decision, this version was shelved into the vault. Elements of the song were later used for a track that later evolved into “Speed Demon”, which ended up on the Bad album in 1987 and released as a promotional single in 1989. Michael would later on revisit the song for the ’Invincible’ album in 1999-2001 with producer Rodney Jerkins and finish it up, but it would unfortunately not be selected for the final tracklist and would later leak on the internet in 2002. So he ultimately shelved it one final time, and each version of the song was left in the vault until 2013 when the final version from the Invincible sessions was contemporized.
