Artist Bio: There’s a song on ARTHUR ALEXANDER’s new album called ’One Life (Is All You Got),’ and one look at the man’s musical resumé demonstrates that he’s known it all along. Arthur’s packed more creative rebirths into his five-decade career than most artists could even imagine, and hit higher heights each time. The span of Alexander’s formative years, from his beginnings as a rock & roll rebel in Soviet-era Poland to his time as the driving force behind not one but two key iconic and iconoclastic bands on the late ’70s New York Punk Rock/New Wave scene – the Merseybeat-inflected POPPEES and legendary proto-power poppers SORROWS – is impressive enough. But his 21st Century renaissance is every bit as exciting: Arthur’s still got all the rock and roll energy of those early years, as anyone who’s seen THE ARTHUR ALEXANDER BAND onstage will testify, and he’s delivering records that tap influences well beyond the power pop template while still demonstrating an absolute mastery of the form. Arthur’s now a decade into an astonishing third act that, like ...STEPPIN’ OUT! itself, brings his entire artistic identity into focus. It’s not like he went musically dormant after SORROWS dissolved in the aftermath of their record-company-interference-compromised second album in 1980: in fact, a move to the West Coast found him immersed in record production, working with a diverse list of artists, from LA punk rockers Dirty Eyes to Mississippi Delta bluesman T-Model Ford and early R&B purveyors The Bloodhounds. Some of that roots rock magic doubtless fueled Arthur’s return to the stage in 2011 with the freshly-formed Arthur Alexander Band, the raucous outfit still blowing the roofs off of LA clubs to this day. The rejuvenating power of live music inevitably led Arthur to write and record his barn burner of a debut solo album ONE BAR LEFT, released to great acclaim in 2018. And that brings us to where Arthur Alexander is today. While the rapturous reception for the new/old Sorrows album might’ve been a victory lap or a career bookend for most other artists, Arthur characteristically sees it as a launching pad for new sonic adventures. The title of ’...Steppin’ Out!’ says it all: here’s our hero trying on a few new sharply-tailored suits before a rock and roll night on the town, and finding that they all fit to a tee.
