The Rose - Definition of ugly is (Live Performance) Sometimes it helps to take a new direction. Up until 2016, members of The Rose were creating music under the name Windfall, bringing an indie slant to their tunes, which had roots in street-corner busking. But when singer-guitarist Kim Woosung, keyboardist Park Dojoon, drummer Lee Hajoon, and bassist Lee Jaehyeong got with a new management company, a few tweaks were made and their pop success had a proper liftoff. 2017’s “Sorry“ and “Like We Used To“ boasted a vocal-dominated soft-rock approach with heartfelt ballads and plenty of confidence. Critics and fans reacted, and a year later Billboard declared them a K-Pop breakout act with everything needed to craft a memorable career. In 2020 fans of The Rose found they’d been invited to open the Seoul date of Halsey’s Manic World tour, but the pandemic squashed the gig. As Covid carried on, the group battled with management, and Dojoon went into the service. Cue disappointment. Now they’re back in action, part of Far East Movement’s Transparent Arts label, and happy with their impressive new album ’Heal.’ We had them into the studio for a spin through “Definition of ugly is“ and “Sour,“ the record’s lead track. Check ’em out, and get a taste for what they might sound like on their Heal Together World Tour dates, which stretch through 2023.
