This recording is actually so funny to me - Russell called me for a private gig at someone’s house in upstate New York during the height of the pandemic, summer 2020, and as a result, we were REALLY eager to get as much real playing with REAL humans as possible. Russell and Kyle were still playing a considerable amount with each other, and with Emmet Cohen, but until this gig, I played with others maybe a total of 2 other times since March of that year. I felt kind of a transformation of sorts during this period of isolation, and a lot of my ideas were kind of unhinged, yet I discovered ways to be even more melodic with my playing as well. All-in-all, some positive growth happened, but when paired with this group of people who were also doing the same kind of growing in their own ways, we were bound to make some serious music no matter what we played.
