When I read that “Hotarubi“ is written by Shinya, I thought that that’s the kind of song he would write, especially when looking at his current project SERAPH. I fell in love with this performance the moment I saw it. From their TOUR 16-17 FROM DEPRESSION TO______[mode of MACABRE]. “Hotarubi“ means “Light of the fireflies“. Translation by me. Annotations: “The divine wind that turns into wind“ - Two things here. 1.: “divine wind“ is “kamikaze“. Now, “kamikaze“ can really just mean “divine wind“. It can also reference two specific typhoons that saved Japan from a Mongolian invasion, and (what we’re usually thinking of in the West when we hear kamikaze), the kamikaze pilots during WWII. Now, when kamikaze pilots are meant, the word is usually written in hiragana. In the lyrics of hotarubi the word is written in kanji, therefore we can assume that either only “divine wind“ is meant, or the connection was supposed to be very subtle and questionable. 2.: A translation I think would be more lyrically beautiful would be “The divine wind turns into a breeze“. This is a very possible option in my opinion, since in Japanese there’s no real differentiation between “wind“, “breeze“ etc. The reason I decided to keep it as “wind“, is that it can be argued that Kyo used the word “kaze“ twice in this line (“kamikaze“ and “kaze“) is actually a stylistic device and it wouldn’t be right to just eradicate it in the translation. 5:34 - 5:47 - I hate it when I have to leave parts blank. As you might have guessed, this is once again not part of the lyrics. I asked multiple Japanese friends to listen to this part and try to hear what he is singing and they all unanimously said that probably only Kyo knows what he sang there. Then there’s me, actually believing I might be able to hear what he’s singing. What I believe to hear doesn’t make much sense in context though I make Kyo look silly I’ll leave it blank. --------------- I do not own Dir En Grey or any of their music or performances.
