Myanmar military introduces new gun laws as ASEAN leaders call for end of violence, peace talks
Myanmar’s shadow government has said it welcomes efforts by ASEAN to start peace talks, but it remains deeply distrustful of the military government in power. A National Unity Government spokesperson has accused the military of trying to mislead the international community, citing its failure to implement the five-point consensus. Hours before the ASEAN summit, the Myanmar army introduced new gun laws that could further increase violence in the strife-torn country. Civilians who currently own firearms illegally will be allowed to apply for gun licences.
