To defy and resist the Nazis or Adolf Hitler during the Second World War was incredibly dangerous, especially for those living within lands controlled by the evil regime. It wasn’t just in Germany that the Nazis encountered resistance, it also occurred within Nazi-occupied territory. Today we look at a story of a remarkable Austrian priest who despite being a Catholic priest decided to take up arms against the Germans and the Nazis. Heinrich Maier was a priest who seemingly was very popular within Vienna in Austria. However when Austria was annexed into the Third Reich he lost his job as a teacher, and decided to resist Hitler who was now in control of the country he loved. Maier would form a resistance group that would find out intelligence and information and pass this on to the Allies through various means. This allowed the Allies, (British and Americans) to carry out strategic bombing attacks on the various armaments sites of interest. Maier’s group would pass information on about the production of the Tiger Tank, and also information about the V2 Rocket and many factories helping the German War Effort. The intelligence was highly valuable, and this helped the allies to bomb the targets and cause less damage to civilians. However Maier and his group were discovered by the Gestapo, and because of their actions were all found guilty of treason. Along with 7 others he was sentenced to death, and was treated barbarically at Mathausen Concentration Camp, even being tortured and crucified for information. He was then tragically executed in his city, Vienna in brutal and fashion using the guillotine.
