She was a woman in a man’s world, yet she rose to command an abbey and wrote political advice to Holy Roman Emperors. O pastor animarum’s text simply and directly prays to the divine Son, whom Hildegard names “shepherd of which we all have been created.“ She asks this shepherd to liberate the pray-er from misery and languishing. Despite the simple and brief nature of the text, appropriate for a liturgical antiphon, the poetess deliberately invokes the most splendid antiphons of the church year, the great “O“ Antiphons sung before Christmas.
