Giovinezza - first modern professional recording, 2014.

“Giovinezza“ was composed by lawyer and composer Giuseppe Blanc in 1909. Originally a Turin university graduation song, it became popular among Italian soldiers during World War I. “Giovinezza“ was the unofficial national anthem of Italy between 1924 and 1943. Subsequently (1943-45) it became the official anthem of the Italian Social Republic (Repubblica Sociale Italiana, RSI). After the capitulation of Italy in 1944, the Allies suppressed the hymn in Italy. Because of its strong association with the fascist regime (indeed, verses 2 and 3 which are not sung here make reference to Mussolini) this song is still banned in Italy. As a non-Italian, I feel not threatened by that melody. As a musician, I strongly oppose any kind of musical censorship and banning of songs. This is one of the catchiest tunes in history, with beautiful lyrics that are totally blameless. Distancing myself from all political connotations, I regard “Giovinezza“ as a very good tune
