Bend it like Beckham - Trailer

Back in 2002, British director Gurindha Chadha’s feel-good sports movie about two girls determined to play professional football was critically dismissed as a stack of cliches; now it’s a classic, which shows it really isn’t over till it’s over, and it’s the audience that matters. The drama follows a Sikh family in London who want their daughter Jess (the delightful Parminder Nagra) to marry a suitable boy. There’s plenty of fun with the cliffhanger goals and, inevitably, a crucial game that clashes with an Indian family wedding. Chadha gave Superstar Keira Knightley her first starring role as the ambitious Jules. Twenty years on, Bend It Like Beckham is still the highest-grossing movie ever made about football. Breezy and optimistic, it was “the first film to get the hang of how to show football action on screen with loose-limbed energy and fun“, wrote Guardian critic Peter Bradshaw. Get in!
