FOREIGN MEDIA’S TAKE ON PENINSULA-RELATED NEWS

외신이 본 한 주간 한반도 뉴스 Welcome to Issues and Insiders. It’s that time of the week during which we touch upon stories here on the peninsula making headlines elsewhere as well. And for this I have Thomas Maresca here in the studio. Thomas great to have you here. I also have Andres Sanchez Braun with us. Andres as always welcome. 1-1) Thomas, let’s begin with details about Seoul and Washington’s anti-submarine warfare exercise near Guam. 1-2) Thomas, do you see these steady sessions of military exercises as keeping North Korea’s provocations at bay? 2-1) Andres, back on Sunday, Seoul, Tokyo, and Washington held their first-ever combined air drills as well. What more can you share with us about this particular session? 2-2) Andres, while North Korea has refrained from launching missiles in recent days, it has maintained its belligerent rhetoric, warning of “catastrophic consequences“ as the U.S. makes visible show of its security commitment to the region. Is North Korea’s bark worse than its bite? 3) Thomas, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, I believe, has been pushing for trilateral security talks including North Korea and China to reportedly counter the U.S. Now some claim this trilateral relationship is based on simple convenience and not tangible partnership. What do you say? 4) And Andres, what do you care to add? Do you see such trilateral interactions on the security front as affecting Seoul’s bilateral ties with Beijing and Moscow, respectively? 5) Thomas, speaking of Korea’s ties with its regional partners. Seoul is seeking a trilateral summit among South Korea, Japan and China within this year. What issues do you believe will top this trilateral meeting, if realized? 6) Andres, on the trade front. Seoul is said to be drawing up contingency plans as Beijing stops its exports of graphite. Do tell us more. 7) Thomas, this next question is something I discussed earlier with a panel of economists. Do you suppose geopolitical tensions are serving to promote a general trend of DEGLOBALIZATION? 8) Andres, against this backdrop, and of course, to expand Korea’s essential list of trade partners, President Yoon Suk Yeol saw the sealing of several notable deals in the Middle East last week. Which ones caught your attention? 9) Thomas, Seoul and Riyadh also released a joint statement, which is the first in over 40 years, condemning civilian attacks amid the conflict between Israel and Hamas. What do you suppose are the broader implications of this joint communique? 10) Meanwhile, Andres, let’s end with a few details about some of the stories that you plan on covering .
