As the rifts between East and West continue to tear apart the fabric of civilization while amplifying the risk of nuclear war, it is of the greatest moral imperative that we take this opportunity to celebrate the deep common history and struggle of the USA and Russia whose cooperative efforts ended the threat of nazism in 1945. The “Spirit of the Elbe” is an example of how our countries can put aside differences, build trust, and cooperate in pursuit of a greater cause. As we work today to confront the most important challenges of the 21st century, we pay tribute to the valor and courage of all those who fought together to defeat fascism.
