Sint-Annakerk), Ghent, Belgium. Please visit an online exhibition about St Anne’s Church via the link below. The church was protected as a monument in 1980 and the entire area as a cityscape. The church was designed in 1851 by Lodewijk Roelandt and simplified by Jacques Van Hoecke. Construction began in 1853 and on June 12, 1866, the unfinished St. Anne’s Church was solemnly consecrated by the Bishop of Ghent, Hendrik-Frans Bracq. The church replaced the old Sint-Anna chapel from 1644 in the Lange Violettestraat. The church was never fully completed. For example, a tower was originally provided on the west side. It is the most important building in Ghent in Rundbogenstil, an eclectic style with Romanesque, Byzantine and Gothic elements. The murals are by Théodore-Joseph Canneel and were finished by Théophile Lybaert after his death.
