Composer Mark Knopfler To me this is Mark’s masterpiece. The lyrics are very powerful and his guitar lines are some of the most moving I think I have ever heard. To me they bring to mind the horrible cost of war in lives and treasure. This is a combination of arrangements. I started from a Dan C Holloway arrangement. Then i added my own stuff. The screened image of the ship is a photo of the USS Luce DD-522. My Father commanded that ship for most of the Pacific theater in World War II. Two months after he was assigned to another ship the Luce was sunk off the coast of Okinawa on May 4th of 1945 taking 157 souls to the bottom of the ocean. A year ago I attended the last reunion of the survivors of the sinking. It was a very moving experience. Many survivors still carry terrible memories and scars that affect them to this day.
