The Hugh Tracey Alto 15 key kalimba is definitely a larger kalimba, but this is wonderful as it results in a louder sound - perfect for outdoors. This one is tuned to the key of G.
I also have the Hugh Tracey Treble (17 key ), which is smaller than the Alto.
The build of the Hugh Tracey feels extremely solid, with about a 1/4” thick top plate, and beautiful contrasting wood pattern. The tines sturdy, yet rugged. The tines have sharp edges compared to, say, LingTing or Hluru, but they are are easily pressed downward. It’s easy to make a scratching sound due to the sharp edges; in the future I might try filing very slightly to help with this.
This song Pipa Language is what influenced me to start playing kalimba. Unfortunately I can’t play the entire song without 17 keys, but the opening verse still sounds lovely. This is the fourth hollow kalimba I’ve tried and it has the most loud and clear “wah-wah” effect.
