Cotto also makes the 3rd defense of his WBA Super World Super Welterweight Championship in this bout. Floyd Mayweather was a 6-1 betting favorite and this is his 2nd fight at 154, Cotto’s 4th in this weight class. Prefight records; Mayweather 42(26)-0, Cotto 37(30)-2. Going into the fight, Mayweather held notable victories over Oscar De La Hoya, Zab Judah, Ricky Hatton, Juan Manuel Marquez, Arturo Gatti, Jesús Chávez, Carlos Hernandez, Shane Mosley, DeMarcus Corley, Genaro Hernandez, Angel Manfredy,Victor Ortiz, Gregorio Vargas, Carlos Gerena, Emanuel Augustus, Sharmba Mitchell, Carlos Baldomir, Diego Corrales, Jose Luis Castillo (2x). While the fight was competitive and exciting, it was mostly in favor of Money Mayweather who won most of the rounds en route to a UD. However, Cotto was game all the way and troubled Floyd a number of times and even gave him a bloody nose though he did not do enough to narrow the gap on the scorecards. With this victory, Mayweather became a 2 time world champion at 154. Interestingly, while Mayweather blocked a lot of Cotto’s punches but neither landed at an overall high percentage according to CompuBox Stats; Floyd at 26% and Cotto at 21%.
