Modal verbs are a category of verbs in English that are used to indicate modality or a sense of possibility, obligation, permission, ability, or likelihood.
Modal verbs are characterized by their unique grammatical features, including their lack of -s or -ed endings, and their ability to function as auxiliary verbs in forming verb phrases.
Modal verbs are used to modify the meaning of the main verb in a sentence, indicating the speaker’s attitude toward the action or state expressed by the verb. For example:
“I can swim“ (ability)
“You should eat more vegetables“ (advice)
“He might come to the party“ (possibility)
Modal verbs can also be used to express degrees of certainty or uncertainty, politeness, or formality in communication. For example:
