Chinese New Year for Kids | What is the Lunar New Year? | 2021 Year of the Ox
Happy Chinese New Year! 2021 is the Year of the Ox! 2020 was the Year of the Rat, and 2019 was the year of the Pig! We often call it Chinese New Year, but the Lunar New Year is celebrated in many Asian countries. It’s based on the phases of the moon! The first day of Chinese New Year begins on the New Moon that appears between January 21st and February 20th.
Our friend the Moon is here to explain this beautiful and exciting holiday. We should say holidays, because the Lunar New Year celebration lasts for 15 days! It’s the longest national holidays. Many people travel from all over to visit with their families, and kids even get a whole month off from school!
The Lunar New Year is associated with the Chinese Zodiac. There is a small cycle of 12 years, each year denoted by a special animal sign. These are the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Then the cycle begins again!
