North Korea state TV airs video of Kim Jong-un riding a horse up the sacred mountain, Mount Paektu
North Korea’s state-run television KRT broadcast a new video of leader Kim Jong Un riding white horse at a sacred mountain with his aides in late 2019.
In the about one-hour footage, Kim, North Korean first lady Ri Sol Ju and high-ranking officials were seen riding horses in snow-capped Mount Paektu and visiting historical places where the state founder Kim Il Sung stayed.
Mount Paektu, a volcano straddling North Korea’s border with China, is sacred to many Koreans, both in the north and south, who revere it as the mythical birthplace of a unified and independent peninsula.
According to North Korean history, Kim’s grandfather, Kim Il Sung, based his anti-Japanese military campaign on the mountain. North Korea says Kim Jong Un’s father, Kim Jong Il, was born at Mount Paektu, though historians believe his actual birthplace was in Russia.
