Tour de France 2021 Stage 11 Highlights | Cracks Start To Show & A Surprise Winner On Mont Ventoux
Tadej Pogačar’s grip on yellow looked insurmountable at the start of the double Mont Ventoux stage, and with the fight for the podium from Richard Carapaz and Ineos hotting up, would sprinters like Wout Van Aert and Mark Cavendish make the time cut on this brutal stage? Before the torture begins, the peloton will encounter three categorised climbs, one of which - the Col de la Liguière ( at 6.7%) - will give the GC riders a great chance to get their legs whirring and their blood pumping. After a short descent from the climb’s summit, the riders will arrive in Sault and start the long, 22km-long drag to the summit of Ventoux. This is the easiest of the three possible routes up the ‘Giant of Provence’, with an average gradient of just 5.1%, but it’s also the longest and could therefore whittle down the bunch to a point where only the main players and their strongest domestiques remain by the summit.
