Texturing an orc in 5 Steps - Substance Painter 2021

In this video I create orc textures in Substance Painter 2021 in 5 simple steps, that apply to any project. The concept I use is by the talented artist Bartlomiej Gawel () My artstation project: Timestamps: 00:00 Step 1: Baking 00:25 Step 2: Color variation 02:00 Step 3: Using maps to drive Detail 10:00 Step 4: Using Procedurals to detail Skin 11:15 Step 5: Using Photos Step 1: Baking The only settings I usually change are: AA samples x2 (or 4.. takes longer) Increase Curvature and AO Ray count to double Amount Step 2: Color Variation: Add the basic, Lage-scale color Variation On this concept we can see it’s white and red Step 3: Using maps Use Curvature and AO maps to drive detail. Keep subtle for realism or it looks stylized Step 4: Using procedurals There are a lot of great options in the Substance Painter library. As always experimentation pays off. Great for Skin damage, Freckles and Moles. Step 5: Use photos might take some trial and error with blending modes to find a good match depending on the type of image. Helps achieve a more realistic, organic look. I have a texture tiled on a fill layer here Some more tips: - Think about where you want to blur when you create UVs so you don’t get inconsistent transitions. - A quick way to get more complexity is to duplicate layers using different (or none) blur degrees and overlaying them. - Loading an old project to create a smartmaterial, you can then simply drag and drop on your new asset. Great way to save time and build up textures If you have any comments or questions you can reach me on artstation:
