The volcano spewed lava and smoke across a wide area, threatening a nearby town, according to the country’s Meteorological Office. Authorities said the eruption began a few kilometres from the fishing town of Grindavik and cracks in the ground stretched toward the village located about 40km (25 miles) southwest of Iceland’s capital Reykjavik. Authorities had evacuated the nearly 4,000 town residents and closed the nearby Blue Lagoon geothermal spa. Keflavik International Airport remained open, but numerous flight delays have been reported.
