American Bandstand 1966 – Top 10 – Barbara Ann, The Beach Boys

Airdate: February 12, 1966 Back in December, The Beach Boys new single “The Little Girl I Once Knew” (an amazing song!) wasn’t getting much radio airplay due to its unusual moments of silence causing “dead air”. Instead, DJ’s started playing “Barbara Ann” from their new album,“ Beach Boys‘ Party!”. As they were trying to be more progressive (“Pet Sounds” was already being recorded at this time) they were surprised when Capitol Records included the impromptu cover on the album and were even more surprised when it became a big hit after being released as a single. Carl Wilson once referred to it as “the bane of their existence” as, while they were trying to be taken more seriously, they had to play this “simplistic” but very popular song at every concert…and still do to this day. ”Barbara Ann” is at #4 today and peaked at #2 last week on Billboard, and was #1 on Cashbox 2 weeks ago.
