How The Romans Annihilated An Entire Civilization | Carthage | Unearthed History
“Carthago delenda est“ or “Carthage must be destoyed“ - Cato the Elder. Carthage, one of the ancient world’s most dazzling empires, was annihilated on Rome’s orders, leaving no building standing and no one spared. The Romans viewed Carthage as a threat to their dominance in the region and sought to eliminate them. The destruction of Carthage occurred in 146 BC after a prolonged siege, during which Roman troops systematically tore down the city. Much of Carthage’s rich history was erased along with the burning of their library, meaning that little is actually known about them except from what can be learnt from Roman accounts. Despite the destruction of Carthage, its legacy continued to influence the Mediterranean world, despite arguments that Rome is the sole progenitor of Western civilization.
