sloth - seven women, seven sins (dir: chantal akerman)

The Image: “I’ll get up in a minute“ / “I’ll have a cigarette - and then make the bed.“ The previously uncelebrated art of procrastination (and the terror of the empty fridge.) To celebrate International Women’s Day (8 March, 2023) a typically subversive (and witty) short by Chantal Akerman called Sloth - one of seven short films by different women directors exploring the Seven Deadly Sins. (Images here: ) I love how we see Akerman attempting to wake up, while her life partner, Sonia Wieder-Atherton plays the cello intently and eventually necks a few vitamin pills, smokes a cigarette, shows us her gloriously disgusting dinner table full of old food and other detritus, attempts to think about the film she is meant to be shooting (on laziness!) - and then goes back to bed again: Good call I think, safe under the snuggly duvet! ‘Claire (Atherton) worked, while I stayed in bed’. Again, Akerman mines her own life for material with which to weave her fine cloth.“ (This clip will probably finish my channel off altogether by attracting a final strike - but I just cannot resist showing anything by Akerman - and it is International Women’s day!)
