Asteroid Apophis is a near-Earth asteroid that gained attention due to initial calculations that suggested a small possibility of it impacting Earth in the future. It was discovered on June 19, 2004, by astronomers at the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona. Apophis is approximately 370 meters (1,214 feet) in diameter, making it a significant object in terms of potential impact consequences.
The asteroid’s name, Apophis, is derived from the ancient Egyptian god of chaos. Initially, there were concerns about a possible impact during its close approach to Earth in 2029. However, subsequent observations and refined orbital calculations ruled out any impact threat for that particular encounter.
The asteroid will make a close flyby of Earth on April 13, 2029, coming within about 31,000 kilometers (19,000 miles) of the Earth’s surface. While this is an extremely close approach in astronomical terms, the current predictions indicate that Apophis will not collide with Earth during this pass.
Ongoing observations are crucial to refining the asteroid’s orbit and predicting its future trajectories accurately. Scientists and astronomers around the world continue to monitor Apophis to assess any potential impact threats in the more distant future
