César Cui - Nocturne in F Sharp minor (score video)

Performer: Philip Edward Fisher Researching Cui’s works always feels like rummaging in a dusty, forgotten chest that you casually find in your attic. A music critic and general officer in the Russian military, Cui is nowadays the least known member of the Mighty Handful (also composed by Balakirev, Rimsky-Korsakov, Borodin and Mussorgsky), a group famous for being the greatest representatives of Russian nationalistic music during the Post-Romanticism period. Even though he didn’t compose much (he was more dedicated to his career as a music critic), it is always nice to find some works of his like this one, which I really like, even if it may not be as musically interesting as other famous composers’ nocturnes. In fact, it is probably one of the pieces in this genre I keep coming back to the most, which is why I decided to make this video. This piece belongs in the Quatre Morceaux suite.
