Taliban flag unfurled in Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia

As if converting Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia into a mosque hadn’t caused enough controversy, now there’s renewed anger over provocative footage showing Afghans unfurling a Taliban flag inside the iconic building. The Afghan government has called on Turkey to take action against what it called Taliban propaganda. Last month Turkey’s Council of State ruled that Hagia Sophia should be turned back into a Muslim place of worship, overturning a decree from 1934. The site had also previously housed a church. UNESCO
