Daniil Trifonov – Bach: Cantata BWV 147: Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring (Transcr. Hess for Piano)

@daniiltrifonov explores the scientific, emotional and spiritual dimensions of Johann Sebastian Bach’s cosmos, his faith, family, and world. Centered around Bach’s late, mystical masterpiece, The Art of the Fugue, Trifonov’s project investigates the man behind the myth – a genius of humility and humour, whose family, loves, losses, and devotion inspired what Daniil Trifonov calls “some of humanity’s most emotionally rich and fascinatingly sophisticated expressions in music.” Trifonov ends his programme with an eloquent reading of Dame Myra Hess’s transcription of “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring”, a reminder that, for Bach and his contemporaries, “music was another embodiment of nature and natural laws, and mathematics and science were also thought to be part of a divine order”.
