It is one of three streets radiating symmetrically from the central spire of the Admiralty: the two others being Nevsky Prospekt and Voznesensky Prospekt. The street originally called the Srednaya (middle) Pershpektiv and then Admiralteisky (Admiral) Prospekt. In the 19th century it was one of the most prestigious residential streets in St. Petersburg. The street was planned and laid after the catastrophic fires of 1736 and 1738 destroyed most of the buildings on Admiralteysky Island..
