Major German labor union kicks off strikes IG Metall, one of Germany’s largest labor unions, in a warning to the government, launched a nationwide strike overnight in the metal and electrical industries. According to IG Metall, 250 workers protested outside the Volkswagen plant in Osnabruck, which is now under threat of closure. The union is pushing for a 7% wage increase over 12 months, while employers are proposing a two-step increase of 3.6% over 27 months. Earlier, German carmaker Volkswagen announced plans to close three plants as part of its cost-saving measures, leading to a reduction of tens of thousands of jobs. Chancellor Olaf Scholz has claimed that the reason for the move is due to flawed decisions made by Volkswagen’s management. Unions representing Volkswagen employees have threatened strikes in response to the plans.
