Side Kipping to Retain the Guard and Defeat the Leg Drag: No Gi BJJ/Jiu-Jitsu
The kipping escape is used most often to defend the mount or the cross-side position, but it also has a role to play in guard retention as well. We can use the kip to CHANGE ANGLES and move our hips FASTER than with conventional methods, and replace our guard even more quickly. Here’s how we’re doing it today: in a case where our partner is passing our guard via an outside method - like leg drag or toreando - we need to turn back to face them in order to recover our guard. The next step is to bring our legs back between ourselves and our partner once again so we can control the distance and go back on the attack. This usually involves a shrimping action, where we push our hip away from our partner to make enough space for recovery. When we kip out to the side rather than stepping on the mat, we remove a step and get to where we’re going faster. Take a look.
