Spain: Lava from La Palma volcano reaches sea forming a 500-metre delta

Mandatory credit: Salvamento Maritimo Images recorded on Wednesday by Maritime Rescue personnel off the coast of the Canary Island of La Palma show the arrival of lava from the Cumbre Vieja volcano into the sea. After 10 days of the eruption, lava emerging from the volcano reached the Atlantic waters on Tuesday night. The solidified magma is creating a delta that is already 500 metres wide on the Tazacorte coast. The area, in the vicinity of Los Guirres beach, remains under surveillance by Salvamento Marítimo. The local authorities have decreed an exclusion area of two kilometres on land and two nautical miles, to ensure safety and prevent the inhalation of toxic gases. Since the eruption began on 19 September, lava spewing from the volcanic craters has caused the evacuation of around 6,000 people and devastated around 250 hectares.
