He was taught by his father at a very young age that they mean everything in terms of a successful career and that it was of the utmost importance to respect them and never forget them in any fashion. Michael got very sick of the media hounding him unmercifully but he never complained about his fans being camped out everywhere he went. I would go so far as to say they were his lifeblood throughout his time on this earth. When he felt lonely, they were there for him. When he felt despised they always took some of that away. When he felt unlovable or abandoned by everything and everyone else, they gave him unconditional love and boosted his flagging self-esteem. He mentioned many times that they were the only reason he went on with his life and felt he owed all of the good in his life to them. A truer love affair would be hard to find. He was always so flattered when fans from other countries knew all of his lyrics. He was very touched how they knew to hold up candles or lighters during certain songs and made up their own dance moves to others. Watch what they do in the beginning of Blood On The Dance Floor in the Munich concert. He saw his fans as extensions of himself and his music and never forgot to thank them in any acceptance speech. The best example I can think of to show his love for them was that he actually knew many of them. He’d always take time to chat with them and sign autographs. There were many times that he would say, “I know you!” to fans that were camped out in front of his gates. And then he’d rattle off which concerts they’de been at. Imagine, out of millions of people, he could pinpoint such details?
