Today we are reading Charles Dickens’s novel “Old Curiosity Shop”. A symbol of Victorian culture, dreamer and humanist, innovator and subtle stylist, romantic and realist, poet and reporter, preacher of active kindness and belief in miracles, creator of the tradition of Christmas prose and the greatest of literary mysteries – “The Mystery of Edwin Drood”. All this is Dickens. Charles Dickens (1812-1870), who during his lifetime became the most popular English-speaking writer, is now a recognized classic of world literature. In his novel “Old Curiosity Shop” (1840), which at one time had a thunderous success, the realistic principle is fancifully combined with fantasy and fairy tale. It fascinatingly describes the adventures of the heroes – twelve-year-old Nellie Trent and her grandfather, the former owner of an antique shop, who wander around England.
