Commissioned by Catherine the Great 1783, the penitentiary became infamous in the 20th Century for housing political detainees. Its former convicts include Vasily Dzhugashvili, son of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, among others. Today the prison is operated as a maximum-security facility with most of the inmates serving minimum ten year sentences.
