Nabucco, Falvetti

Michelangelo Falvetti (1642-1692) Nabucco Oratorio on a libretto by Vicenze Gattini In his ’Cappella Meditarranea’, exotic percussion, oriental flutes, gambas and lutes together make up a unique world of sound. Seventeenth-century Sicily and the mythical Babylon merge into one. In Falvetti’s oratorio, King Nebuchadnezzar falls into the trap of pride and idolatry. In his thirst for power he is troubled by fear and unease. Three young administrators are killed horrifically while the silent majority just looks on. In this work with its delightful melodies and moments of striking beauty, ensemble passages alternate rapidly with solos, recitatives and dialogues. Alarcón’s inventive instrumentation and the rhythmic precision of the vocal ensemble and the musicians make this ’Nabucco’ a special event.
