Ohio Express performing “Yummy Yummy Yummy“, released originally in 1968. It reached #1 in Canada Top Singles and New Zealand Charts, #4 in US Billboard Pop Singles and US Cash Box Top 100, and #5 in UK Singles Chart. “There has been much speculation as to the meaning of the lyrics. Some claim it is is an innocent expression of the ’warm fuzzy’ feeling we can get when we are in love, others believed it was a reference to pregnancy while yet others believed there to be a hidden reference. This song was commissioned by Niefeld, Paley and Kuhn Advertising in Chicago, IL as a possible jingle for Wyler’s grape drink. Bill Ries, the account rep, played the song for the client and the client politely said they hated it. There is only as much hidden meaning in the song as the agency was willing to pay and they really didn’t pay that much. The intent was to sell a drink mix. Wyler’s had marketed lemonade mix for several years and was expanding their line, probably intending to compete against Kool-Aid.“ Floyd Marcus is the drummer for the 1910 Fruitgum Company, who also recorded for Buddah Records and recorded many of the same songs as The Ohio Express. Floyd told us: “Joey had brought in a demo of ’Yummy Yummy Yummy,’ and often back then the demos were not nearly as sophisticated as what you can do at your house today with Pro Tools - they want much more finished product these days. But Joey went and he did ’Yummy Yummy Yummy’ as a demo, and Jeff and Jerry said, ’Yeah, we’re going to take you to the studio and do this.’ And before they knew it, the demo was out on the market. So it became a big hit, but you know, The Ohio Express wasn’t really happy with it going out that way. They never had meant it to go out in the form it did.
