It remains anonymous and is one of the oldest songs to have come down to us. Following in the footsteps of Joseph Bédier and his joint work with Pierre Aubry (Les chansons de croisade, 1909). Around the middle of the 12th century, and more precisely in 1144, the fortress of Edessa (Rohais, the present-day city of Şanlıurfa or Urfa in southern Turkey) fell to Imad ed-Din Zengi, atabeg of Mosul and Aleppo. Still known as Zengi, the man was also nicknamed ’the bloody one’ by the Christian chroniclers of the time (quite a programme). Very advanced in Islamic lands, the county of Edessa, which was one of the first Latin states in the East, was then under the regency of Queen Melisende of Jerusalem. Her heir Baldwin III was only 13 years old and still too young to govern. ---- This chant was performed by La Capella Reial de Catalunya - Grupe Sufi Al-Darwish - Hespèrion XXI / Artistic direction: Jordi Savall #JordiSavall (C) Alia Vox ---- Top Patrons: (10 $ or more donation) Randall Flagg, Lord Funkicus, Mobius, Daniel Marchetto, Walrusking14 unter Rhoades, Joseph Blain, George Sherratt, The Salk, Brendon Wade, James A Panter, Christophe, Jason Huang, Matthew Stephenson, Peter Hundy , Borna Situm Nagy, Ewa Jasniach, DJ, kingbumi01 Rafal Jedrasik, Sancte Michael defende nos, Battle Brother, Ryan Magoon, Daniel Bednarski Rosalie treiber, SPUD, Simeon Mallette, Maciej Durakiewicz, Dominique Blouin, Owhotwaterohno ----- Chant text in Old French: Chevalier mult estes guariz, Quant Deu a vus fait sa clamur, Des Turs e des Amoraviz, Ki li unt fait tels deshenors.
