The original version of “Invincible” the title-track to the album of the same name was leaked by American producer Eulonzo on August 29th, 2023, on Michael’s 65th birthday. It was unknown this version existed. It was also planned to have the original version of “Work That Body” as the B-side for the 12” single, but that was cancelled at the last minute. This is one of the first tracks to officially include The Rag Tag Band, as well as the original version of ‘Unbreakable’.
Although fans are familiar with the original version from the “Invincible” album in 2001, it has been revealed that the song “Invincible” (originally titled “She’s Invincible”) was originally written and recorded as far back as 1984-1986, during the Victory sessions, as well as during his brother Jermaine Jackson’s Dynamite sessions at Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angelos. Jermaine is also the co-writer of the song. Sarah Greim aka Syradelic provides a guitar solo in the 12” extended version.
There is also controversy surrounding the origins of this song. It is believed this was one of the original songs chosen for Berry Gordy’s “The Last Dragon” movie, as it has dialogue from Laura Charles, played by Denise “Vanity” Matthews. Although the song features the voice of Vanity, there is believed to be no history or past between her and Michael and that the dialogue is there due to the initial movie connection. He began working further on this version around 1984-1986 with Joe Kehr Jermaine Jackson as co-producer and co-writer, and members of The Rag Tag Band.
While the song runs around less than 5 minutes, the full-length version is almost 8 minutes long, with singer-songwriter Sparklyel providing additional vocals near the end of the main song & in extended portions. There’s also a snippet of an unreleased song ‘Get’cho Weight Offa Me’ in the track. Due to time constraints, the song was edited down to potentially fit on a vinyl if they ever decided to put it on an album, or possibly The Last Dragon soundtrack.
While they all liked this version, there was a huge dispute between Michael, Jermaine and Berry Gordy due to the “He’s buying diamonds and pearls/He can’t do it like me” lyric. It is alleged that Prince heard the song from Vanity when they had last spoken at the time of 1984, and was instantly upset, as he felt the lyric was a quiet reference to him, especially knowing his ex-girlfriend was the co-star of the film that this would be on the soundtrack of.
Ultimately, the song was quickly pulled from the The Last Dragon soundtrack to avoid any further drama, and later replaced by Upset Stomach by Stevie Wonder. Since the song was recorded during his brother Jermaine’s Dynamite album sessions, the two brothers agreed for Jermaine to keep the song, which he evolved it into the song “Dynamite”, for the album of the same name later that summer of 1984. This version would later be considered for the Captain EO Soundtrack album.
Michael would eventually send Berry another song for The Last Dragon soundtrack that also didn’t make it. Michael would later on revisit the lyrics to the song and rename it just “Invincible” for the album of the same name in 1999-2001, that one being produced by Teddy Riley, although controversially, Jermaine is not listed for co-writing the lyrics.
