The Villa is an iconic 1932 building in business brick style by Geo Henderick. The building is characterized by listed facades with successive recessed and protruding volumes over two floors, ending in a pitched roof and balconies. On the roof are four dormers. Remarkable is the use of brick and raw concrete which accentuate the volumes. The Millionaires’ Quarter is a unique district in the Belgian City of Ghent. In 1913, Ghent was completely devoted to the last World Exhibition before the first World War. The exhibition was held on terrains close to the Sint-Pieters train station. After WWI, the terrain was developed with houses and luxury apartments for the rich, hence the name of the quarter: “Miljoenenkwartier“ (neighbourhood for those who have millions to spend). It was here that leading architects from the inter-war period built some of their most prestigious projects. Many of them also owned houses here as a showcase. From eclectic Belle Epoque mansions, reflecting the pré-War architecture to modernistic houses. Despite its diverse building styles, the area nevertheless radiates its own unique sort of unity. The Millionaires’ Quarter, home of the rich locals, has been protected as a cityscape since 1994. Eduard Artemyev (b. 1937) Eduard Artemyev is a Russian composer of electronic music and film scores. Outside of Russia, he is mostly known for his soundtracks for films such as Solaris, Siberiade, Stalker and Burnt by the Sun. His interest in electronic music and synthesizers began after his graduation in 1960, when electronic music was still in its infancy. He wrote his first composition in 1967, on one of the first synthesizers. He was thus, one of the first composers and a pioneer of electronic music. His collaboration with the film director Andrei Tarkovsky in the 1970s made him well-known. He wrote the film scores of Tarkovsky’s Solaris, Zerkalo, and Stalker. Later, he also wrote film scores for Andrei Konchalovsky and Nikita Mikhalkov. His film scores and his music received numerous accolades as well as three Nika Awards. Eduard Artemyev’s composition Campaign or Death of the hero (Siberiade theme) has been used at 2014 Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Sochi, and his music theme from At Home Among Strangers has been used at the closing ceremony.
