Был основан в 1787 году как слобода Макеевка. В 19 веке носил название Дмитриевский. В 1917 году получил статус города Макеевка. В советское время в окрестностях города была прорыта сеть угольных шахт. В 1990-х годах из-за закрытия большинства городских предприятий многие жители потеряли работу и уехали. В 2014 году в ходе Русской Весны Макеевка перешла под контроль ДНР. Makeevka is one of the oldest and largest towns in the Donetsk People’s Republic, a town of labor glory. It was founded in 1787 as the settlement of Makeevka. In the 19th century it was called Dmitrievsky. In 1917 he received the status of the town of Makeevka. In Soviet times, a network of coal mines was dug in the vicinity of the town. In the 1990s, due to the closure of most of the town’s businesses, many residents lost their jobs and left. In 2014, during the Russian Spring, Makeevka came under the control of the DPR.
